Linde + Robinson Laboratory for Global Environmental Science
Pasadena, California
The transformation of the historic Linde + Robinson Laboratory into a state-of-the-art model of sustainability earned KornRandolph the 2013 | Preservation Design Award, Rehabilitation, California Preservation Foundation and the 2012 | Project of the Year, U.S. Green Building Council Los Angeles Chapter Sustainable Innovation Awards.
As landscape architect, KornRandolph worked with researchers to design a mix of succulents, natives, and drought-tolerant varieties that creates a courtyard, introduces a living pond, and enhances the building’s historic architecture that previously relied on captured rainfall for irrigation. The living pond ecosystem that serves as a campus focal point is the result of a 44,000-gallon subterranean cistern used for irrigation in the dry season. The result is a LEED Platinum building and landscape solution reflecting the challenges and innovations of its stakeholders.
